A STUBBORN GOVERNMENT!
The demonstration in Valletta and the subsequent defeat of the Opposition motion dominated Tuesday's front pages.
The Times carried a prominent picture along with the story, showing the Prime Minister seemingly avoiding eye contact as he accepted a letter from the unions asking ofr the motion to be approved. It also carried a story about the reform of enforcement services which will place more emphasis on education and less on handing out contraventions.
In-Nazzjon's photo, on the other hand, shows a smiling and confident Dr Gonzi as he explained in Parliament why the price revision mechanism worked well, reacting to sensitive changes in the oild prices.
L-Orizzont once again spread its main picture across the front and back pages, this time inserting photos of the crowds that turned up for the second demonstration in 24 hours against a backdrop of the roof of Castille. The headline reads: "The government that betrayed the people".
And The Malta Independent also opted for the demonstration as its main story. Its second article was about the energy vouchers given to people considered to be vulnerable, noting that by the time the water and electricity bills were issued, the vouchers had expired and the bills had to be paid in full.
A WARMER FEBRUARY IN YEARS
Mild winter conditions continued into February, with higher temperatures and much lower rainfall than the average, Met Office data shows.
The Met Office at the Malta International Airport reported that just 15.6 mm of rain fell last month at the airport, far below the 61.3 mm average. The second-highest February temperature, 24.4°C, was also recorded last month, on February 18, in an unusually warm day brought about by a short-lived thermal ridge over the central Mediterranean, cloudless skies and southerly winds.
Mean air temperatures reached 13.8°C, above the 12.4°C climate norm. Both the mean minimum (10.9°C) and the mean maximum (16.7°C) temperatures were higher than the norm, while sea temperature, which averaged 15.7°C, was 1°C warmer than average. Thunder was only heard on 1 occasion, the first of the month, compared to the average of 3 for February. Hail was also recorded on the same day.
Meanwhile, bright sunshine averaged 6 hours and 53 minutes a day.
