How to SEO Your Website

Step 1: Submit

Submit to the main search engines here: http://www.submitexpress.com Make sure you're at least on Google, Bing and Yahoo, the rest will come. Submit to directories such as DMOZ, Technorati, blog directories (Google blog directories), and directories in your niche.

Step 2: Build Links

You need to get your web address on as many other domains as possible. You can do this in many ways:

  • Forum signatures
  • Blog comments
  • Submit to directories
  • Publish your own articles on article publishing sites
  • Stumble/Digg your articles, share them on Facebook, Myspace and Twitter. Give your readers the chance to do it, install Social Bookmarking plugins for your site.
  • Join Google/Yahoo/Facebook groups and post links to your site and articles on their message boards. Make sure it is relevant and be involved in the group, or you may be banned.
  • Look at how other sites do it: Type: "Link: url" into Google, replacing "url" with the address of a popular site in your niche, to see what sites link to them.

Step 3: Build Internal Links

Do what you can to get links to other pages within your site. There are many programs that help to do this. A good tool to start with is an "Other Recommended Pages" add-on for your site. If you're using a standard content management system or blog site, these should be plentiful.

Step 4: Optimize

Optimize your meta tags. Check you page's meta tags here: http://www.seocentro.com/tools/search-engines/metatag-analyzer.html You need to do this for every article you publish. You should have everything at 100% for every page. It's actually not that difficult.

  • Use a paragraph from the text for the descr i ption.
  • Only use keywords that appear a few times in the text.
  • Use <h1>, <h2> etc for titles within your articles.
  • Put keywords in your alt tags for images and objects.
  • Learn what works by playing with the meta tag checker until you get a page to be 100%!

Make sure all your URLs are search engine friendly. There is a good article on how to do this here: http://www.tamingthebeast.net/articles3/spiders-301-redirect.htm You may need a plugin or some other code, depending on your content management system. For Wordpress use All in One SEO.

Step 5: Check

Step 6: Repeat

SEO is an ongoing process. You won't get there overnight, it takes a long time and a lot of dedication!
