Skating Costume Business Glides To Success

She’s never done a triple salchow but that doesn’t mean Laurie Hammond hasn’t been part of several gold medal figure skating performances.

Hammond owns Triple Loop, a skating and dance supply store in Colchester which has been around for almost 11 years.

Hammond is a seamstress and long had aspirations to be a clothing designer. Her four daughters were involved in figure skating and dance when they were young. Hammond began to design and sew their dresses and soon a business was born.

Hammond estimated at least half of all local skaters compete wearing her costumes. She also attends local competitions as a vendor, selling tights, performance makeup, hair decorations and skating clothing for dolls.

She also attracts out of town customers. Hammond guesses she makes at least 50 outfits each year.

A basic dress with just a few crystals can go for $130, but a fancy dress with more than 1,000 crystals might be as high as $800.

The cost includes an initial consultation and an early fitting to ensure the dress fits before the final touches are added.
