Latest new from CIVIC - "In the Hot Zone" by Kevin Sites
CIVIC has announced her partnership with Kevin Sites in the newsletter I received recently. Following is a copy of the letter.

As one of the world's most respected war correspondents, Kevin Sites has spent the past seven years covering global war and disaster. For his new book, "In the Hot Zone," Sites ventured into the dark heart of war - armed with just a video camera, a digital camera, a laptop, and a satellite modem. Sites journeyed to virtually every major combat zone from Somalia to Iraq, bringing to his readers an honest account of war's devastation and through vivid story-telling puts a human face on war not often seen.

Sites is a longtime friend of ours, helping Marla Ruzicka during the earliest days of this organization's work to help war victims. He is generously donating a portion of the proceeds from "In the Hot Zone" to CIVIC.

You can support CIVIC by purchasing a copy of "In the Hot Zone: One Man, One Year, Twenty Wars" today:

&s=books&qid=1189116232&sr=8-1

(if the link does not work, click here)

Better yet, make your Amazon.com purchase through Maatiam (formerly FreePledge) to send an extra 5% donation to CIVIC with no additional cost to you!
http://civic.maatiam.com/

For everyone who cares about the human cost of war, this is an important, thought provoking read. It's also a great holiday gift for anyone on your list. What could be better than getting a great book and supporting CIVIC's work to help war victims at the same time?

Sincerely,
Sarah

The Beast of Sipadan, part 2

That same morning, Janet Brown registered herself at the receptionist at the Sipadan Island Resort.  The place was quiet.  Only a few other tourists were seen talking in the resort restaurant.  Janet walked to an empty seat at one corner of the restaurant.  She ordered her favourite drink, Cappucino and sat down.  Waiting, she scanned the horizon.  The beach was white and the sea so calm.  Such a beautiful place, she thought.  David was right.  If only David was here with her, she thought again.  As she watched the seagulls, her mind drifted back to England.  They had planned the trip together but fate interfered.  David was killed in an accident a week before their trip.  This trip is for David, she reminded herself.  She finished her drink, got up and walked to her chalet.
The sun was setting down when she reached her chalet which was about one hundred meters from the beach.  It was an inverted V-shaped house on stilts a meter high, with just a door in front and a window at the back.  A traditional wooden stairs leads to the front veranda.  A few coconut trees surrounding the chalet swayed in the evening breeze and the sounds of cicadas greeted her arrival.  Not a human sound was heard, only the trees, wind and the cicadas.  Janet loved the peaceful and serenity of the place.

As she approached the chalet, tears rolled down her cheek.  She missed David.  She climbed up the steps and entered the chalet.  There was a singles bed on the left side and a small table and chair on the right.  She placed her bag on the table and lowered herself onto the bed and lied down.  A little dust in the air told her the presence of a ray of light, beaming down to one corner of the chalet from a hole in the thatched roof.  She watched the light, the dust dancing and darting in and out of the path reappearing at another section of the ray.  Slowly, the dancing images began to transform and take shape.  She saw her England, then her David, as always the beautiful smile was there.  He was smiling at her, still laying there hypnotized by his presence.  Slowly she could see the whole of him and as she watched him waving at her, she felt as if she was on a bus moving away from him further and further away until she could see him no more but the beach, the coconut trees, the sea and the seagulls.  As she drifted into sleep, she saw herself flying with the seagulls.

The Beast Of Sipadan
Here's a story I wrote sometime ago. Comments are welcome.
The Beast Of Sipadan Part 1
When he opened his eyes,  he was lying on the white sandy beach.  He did not know where he was.  The sky was dark.  It was going to rain.  The cold wind from the sea blew his dark curly hair.  He wiped off the sands from his face.  His hand hurt.  There was deep gash on his left palm.  A black bird, perching on an old tree stump was watching him, silently.  His body was aching all over.   Painfully, he got up and limped slowly towards the woods.

Suddenly, there was a loud thunder.  A blue streak of lightning struck a tree just a few meters in front of him.  Bright lights blinded him temporarily.  He shielded his face with his arm.  When he felt it was safe, he lowered his arm down cautiously looking at the place where the lightning struck.  A branch had fallen off the tree and it was smouldering.

The cold wind had gathered speed and was blowing smoke away from the tree.  It was turning into a storm.  Then the rain began to drop, slowly at first, then heavier.   He was so cold.  He stumbled on, dragging his wet tired body through the woods.  He had to find shelter soon or he would die in the rain.  The rain got heavier until he could not even see beyond three footsteps in front of  him .

Then he saw it, a faint glow of light and the shape of a small house.  It looked like a house.  It must be a house, he prayed.  He trudged on, without letting his eyes off the light.  He was afraid if he stopped looking at the light, it would disappear.  The light seemed so far away even as he trudged faster towards it.  It was as if the house was running away from him.  With only a little energy left, he forced himself to run to the house.  Then he fell.  There was no more light, his eyes could see nothing.  He felt nothing and hear nothing.  He blacked out.
